Another urban travel picture, this one from Florence (Fiorenze), Italy.
In the distance, forming the far horizon, is the Ponte Vecchio — a historic structure, and the only bridge in Florence to survive World War II. As you can see, it’s well lit at night — but a long exposure still helps. I took this image on a hazy, foggy night, so that lends the lights in the image a halo they wouldn’t otherwise have. A little lens flare from the lights adds to the somewhat surreal effect.
For what it’s worth, I didn’t do any post-processing of the color in this image. It has a sepia-tone look to it, but that comes naturally from the sodium lights used in this part of town. This is one of those cases where I really didn’t want to do a white balance correction for the light source — and I think it paid off.
At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted the shadowy couple on the right in the image, but I think they add some life to it. They look a bit mysterious in this picture, but they were really just a young tourist couple walking along the river, taking pictures of each other in front of various buildings. Here, they’ve stopped to look at the pictures on their digital camera’s display.
