No, I’m not being unappreciative. I just wanted to point out the sad bit of irony in this image — another dying mall image, this time from the food court.
This is a pretty simple setup, but with very tricky lighting. Some of the food court lights are still on, but the background (where a vendor’s shop used to be) is unlit, and I didn’t want to get gross levels of lighting contrast courtesy of the flash reflecting off light-colored chairs and fixtures in the foreground.
So here’s what I did.
I took this picture in my pre-Gorillapod days, so I found a countertop to set the E-510 on, turned it to plain old “Auto” mode, set up a 2-second delay on mirror lockup (to avoid blurring things when I pushed the shutter button), and partially blocked the flash with the fingers of one hand.
