Another Paris picture, this one of a line of rental bikes awaiting their next customers.
In 2007, Paris started a system of bike rentals — comprising more than 20,000 bikes available at nearly 1,500 automatic stations. This works out to one station roughly every 250 yards across the more urban areas of town. Riding a bike is free for the first half hour, then rates rise with time — not a big problem, apparently, since most riders just use them for short jaunts. You rent a bike from one station, then turn it in at another — so you don’t have to deal with keeping track of your own bike while you’re out running errands.
I liked the mechanical regularity of the bikes, contrasted to the green chaos of the plant stores behind them. Still, I’ll admit that the composition is a bit cluttered as a result — likely the reason this has been rejected for use by stock photo shops.
Ah, well, maybe this is one of those images that only its “papa” can love…
