An old (film) dog's odyssey to learn new (digital) tricks

So close, yet so far

April 10th, 2008 in Images, Nature

I took this picture on La Jolla beach a few weeks back:

Out for a stroll

I like the basic setup of this picture, since it shows the gull out for a walk — just like the humans in the background. Still, I don’t think the composition really works, because the bird’s just too small in the frame. Had I thought about it at the time, I would have taken this picture (as insurance), then tried to work up closer to the gull to fill more of the frame with him in a few more pictures. Just fire away with the camera, paparazzi-style. Getting the camera closer to the sand would probably have helped, too.

I’m finding this is one of the hardest “film” habits for me to shake. I keep forgetting (at least subconsciously) that it no longer costs anything to take one more picture, so I might as well take a lot and sort out the good ones later.

It’s easy to see in retrospect, but once the moment’s gone, it’s gone. I so need to develop new digital habits…
