I’m working hard to do better at my macro photography, but obviously have a ways to go. Here’s a shot I took near La Jolla, California a few weeks back:
I thought it was pretty good — but it took a beating in some photography forums I tend to spend time in. The bug’s dirty, people thought that out-of-focus parts of the leaf were distracting, the lighting is bad, etc. So I re-cropped the photo, and cleaned it up as best I could, resulting in this:
Better, I think, but I still have much to learn. I suspect some of the issue is with my gear — these shots were taken with my 70-300mm zoom lens, which has some macro capability (but you have to be about 3 feet away from your subject!). I’m definitely saving my pennies for a dedicated macro lens, meanwhile trying to make do with the gear I’ve got.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for some really good bug macro photography, go check out the Flickr gallery for Brian Valentine (a.k.a., Lord V).

Hello Friend,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Great improvements from original photo to finished product! You will LOVE a bona fide macro lens. BEST thousand dollars I ever spent, hands down.
A quick question for you, for my next post at DPS I’m writing about how to create a successful blog. This las post was the why the next the how, see? Could you tell me what you think of your current hosting with wordpress? How do you feel the image quality is? Does it remain true to what you import from your computer? I’m asking around so that I’m sure to give a balanced report.
Thank you so much! You can email me at natalienorton[at]gmail[dot]com.
Happy Shooting!
