An old (film) dog's odyssey to learn new (digital) tricks

It’s supreme, it’s preeminent, it’s…

Paramount

It's supreme, it's preeminent, it's...

Sign for the Paramount Theater; downtown Denver, Colorado.

I shot this on my Christmas lights trip to downtown last weekend. The Paramount, for what it’s worth, is just a fantastic place to see live music. Not the biggest venue, but absolutely one of the classiest.

It’s also got this great neon sign that’s a pain in the rump to capture at night. The letters light up sequentially, and they’re all lit together for at most a second before the sign goes black and the cycle starts again. Since you need to take a longish exposure, and some sort of mirror flip-up delay is a good idea in order to get a sharp image, you have to basically guess when to hit the cable release such that everything works at the right time.

So I set up my E-520 on a tripod, and wound up taking more than a dozen shots (with bracketed exposures) until I got two that I liked. This is the better of the two, essentially straight out of the camera.
