Another shot from the L.A. Zoo, this time of a Gerenuk:
Also known as Waller’s Gazelle, the Gerenuk is a long-necked species of antelope that gets its common name from a Somali word meaning “giraffe-necked.” Personally, I just think their little heads and big eyes and ears make them look cool and alien. Apparently part of their defensive strategy is to avoid sudden moves, because there was a small herd of Gerenuk in their habitat when I visited, and they all basically stood like statues. Occasionally one or two would move a bit, but then they’d all freeze again.
Handy thing, at least for me — this made it much easier for me to frame some shots of them!

Aren’t they the funniest looking creatures?! They make me smile every time I see them.

Thanks, too, Arjan & Ginnie!
Criminy, I thought I’d fixed threaded comments on this blog, but they’re still “not there yet”…
