An old (film) dog's odyssey to learn new (digital) tricks

The shape of reflected glories

May 4th, 2009 in Images, Night, Urban

So as I’ve mentioned before, I was recently in Seattle for a few days. Since I don’t know anybody in town, and didn’t have any commitments at night, it left me plenty of time to skulk around after dark. My hotel was right downtown, so this put plenty of interesting sights in easy walking distance.

One night I went walking along the waterfront for a while — and stumbled across this sight:

The shape of reflected glories

I took a few shots at different exposures — the shorter ones emphasize the ripples on the water, the longer ones blur out all the ripples and look like nearly solid stripes of color. Personally, I like this in-between exposure (0.8 sec) the best — gives it just enough blur to look abstract.

Oh, and if you were curious about what’s being reflected in the water, here’s the big scene:

Thanks for sharing. I go to Seattle often and I’m always looking for interesting things to shoot.
