Before our most-recent trip, I’d been to Hawaii’s big island just once, years ago — and hadn’t heard about its green sand (Papakolea) beach before the trip, but couldn’t wedge in a jaunt to it during the visit. So *this time,* I really wanted to see the thing even though it’s a pain to get to.
The first plan was to drive to it, since we’d rented a Jeep on our trip. But the dirt road out got too bumpy for my wife’s stomach — so “Plan B” was to park the Jeep where the dirt road changed from merely bad to really bad, and walk the rest of the way. But soon both my wife and daughter decided that a 2 mile walk wasn’t what they cared for. So they opted to stay behind in the Jeep (playing games and reading books) while I made the hike (about 45 minutes each way if you keep up a good pace).
I’ll post some images from the beach in a later post or two, but in the meantime, here’s a brief bit of video I took at the beach:
As you can see, the beach isn’t really a green-green, more an olive color. Still pretty amazing to walk on it…
