So I’ve been doing a little tinkering around with my new toys, the Olympus 50mm macro lens and extension tube. So long as you’re careful about some things, it’s a powerful combo. Here’s a macro image I took recently using this combination…

This is a panorama of images I took some months back, but didn’t really get hammered into shape until recently. It’s the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy — and the images were taken just after a day-long drizzling rain started to let up…

So I’ve managed over the past few months to gather up a mangy collection of hardware for my E-510, the purpose of (some of) it being to enable me to make macros. I thought it was about time to pull together some sort of side-by-side comparison of how it all performs….

As I’ve mentioned, I bought the Olympus 50mm f/2.0 macro lens for my kit a few weeks back. I’m discovering it’s a fantastic piece of glass when you want to draw a viewer’s attention to part of the frame — it gives you a very shallow depth of field (DOF) when it’s wide open, particularly up close. It also gives you really nice bokeh…

As far as I’m aware, all DSLRs have a built-in flash — and from what I can tell, these flashes all pretty much stink. Of course, you’ve got a range of options for dealing with this — depending on how much money you want to spend, and how much additional gear you want to wind up carrying…

If you’ve been reading my posts for very long, you might recall that I’ve been tinkering around with a setup for doing macro and closeup photography at home. I started out by buying a 20″ light tent, but found that the lights it came with were pretty anemic. So I augmented the tent with another [...]

So this was news to me — a week from today (i.e., the 27th of April, 2008) is “Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day.” The idea is to encourage people to take a break from our increasingly technological world, and spend a bit of time taking pictures with a pinhole camera. If all sorts of technically non-adept folks can do this, I figured I’d give it a try as well…

As I mentioned in my last post, I bought an adapter so I could use my old (1979) Zuiko 50mm / f1.8 lens on my E-510. I’d heard that this combination was really bright, and thought that this would help in situations where I wanted to focus attention on a subject using a tight depth of field (i.e., subject in focus with everything in the foreground and background out of focus).
So I put “shorty” on the ‘510, went out in the yard, and practiced on some early (for Colorado) spring flowers…

Well, I finally found a low-cost way to add a lens to my E-510’s stable — by reworking an old lens. Here’s my old OM-1’s “kit” 50mm / f1.8 lens, now with an adapter so it’ll fit my “four thirds” E-510
